OK - So sorry this is late. RL has got in the way of this assignment. But after several abortive attempts I have realised that I don't have a photogenic kitchen. So I pressed someone else's into service. This still isn't exactly what I wanted. I wanted to get someone in the picture doing something - but couldn't coerce her!

Anyway here is my A-round in the kitchen submission. It's also a self portrait if you look closely
Spidermafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15261005466472218069noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891407902673813690.post-23785876310042233852011-11-10T07:54:00.001-08:002011-11-10T07:56:30.749-08:00Around the KitchenAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08640755359453151851noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891407902673813690.post-64050652760740902382011-10-27T09:30:00.000-07:002011-10-27T09:33:56.722-07:00Assignment: Around the KitchenFor this assignment you will be shooting in your kitchen. In the end I decided to take my inspiration from old movie stills - they tend to use quite dramatic lighting, be quite high contrast images and be fairly moody. not what I had envisioned when I set this project - I'd had a different idea entirely - but hours of combing flickr looking at self portraits gave me this idea. Also hides my bent tooth! Bonus.
Use studio-lights or flash if at all possible - or at least do something creative with the light. And just pretend that a friend has asked you to take a portrait of them, so you want to give the best photo back of the subject - its just the subject this time is you.

Rules: I'm hoping for a traditional portrait shot where you will be recognisable (mostly) so no backs of heads or complete silhouettes. But so that we can be creative if you want lets set a boundary that at least one eye must be visible in the picture.

Deadline: <strike>End of day 28 June</strike>.
New Deadline: End of day 12 July (two weeks - to allow Aaron to celebrate 4th July without worrying! )

Kate gave me the idea for this when we were trying to find some new people to join, so lets try it.
I was trying to go for the specific effect of the original, but put things in slightly different positions.

The hardest part of this was getting the camera to auto focus when I wasn't in the chair. In the end I thought I had the frames in the bag, packed everything away, got changed, (bearing in mind I was doing this at around 2am so I wouldn't get stared at) and moved the furniture back into position... Only then did I port the pictures back into the computer and realise I was slightly blurred... Dang.. So at this res its not too bad, and theres a lot of Photoshop twiddling to try and sharpen the image, as well as desaturated it slightly.
Quite happy with it - but this wasn't the exact one I wanted to do and like yerself this was a lot harder than I thought. Least I could get away with being a bloke in this one!

A different picture, based on an idea by McNeney, is here.Spidermafhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15261005466472218069noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891407902673813690.post-25189912251278600872008-03-25T01:29:00.000-07:002008-12-12T15:28:52.649-08:00Submission: Homage

I found this assignment a lot more difficult than I initially thought. I think it was because I found it hard copying someone's work, who obviously puts a lot of thought into the reason behind each photo. As I didn't have that same connection, I found it difficult to replicate. I decided not to copy the photo completely as I wanted it to be my own interpretation; so the hands are different, as is the angle of the photo. It was quite tricky getting a pose, which looked natural, and even this looks a bit staged. The Photoshop tweaks were minimal; just a slight adjustment of levels and then a colour cast; sepia plus a little bit of red, as that is the colour of the fabric, which I also wanted to convey. I also wanted to keep more detail in the hands; they seem a little burnt out in the original (but that could just be my screen).
Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17000445297446469690noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8891407902673813690.post-54384949844699450922008-03-19T07:14:00.001-07:002008-03-21T08:38:27.163-07:00Assignment. Each one is painted a different colour combination, and I decided to take photos of every single one to make up a series of images. I took all the photos just straight on and then cropped and rotated them in Photoshop just to make them more interesting. I like this one as the lighting is interesting and the leaves add a bit of interest.
Katehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17000445297446469690noreply@blogger.com1
